Overview

Before going live with your referral program, we recommend testing your campaign. Once you’ve created a campaign, configured tracking and enrolled an ambassador to test with, you’re ready to begin testing.

How do I test a referral?

Follow the steps below to test your campaign to ensure a commission is being generated.

Step 1: In the navigation menu on the left, click “Contacts.”

Step 2: Within this section, go to the "Ambassadors" tab at the top of the page and click on the name of the ambassador you are using to test.

Step 3: Once on this individual’s profile, scroll down to the "Campaigns" section on the left. After clicking to expand this section, copy their referral link under the campaign you want to test.

Please note, if your campaign is in test mode, the ambassador will also need to be in test mode. Conversely, if your campaign is live, the ambassador will need to be in live mode as well. Test ambassadors are denoted by a blue flag over their avatar. If you do not have a test ambassador enrolled in your referral program, follow the steps in our support article: How do I add a test ambassador?

Step 4: Next, paste the referral link into a private browser, such as an Incognito Window in Chrome. Ambassador tracks cookies to maintain accuracy, so you’ll need to mask your history so you have the effect of a new visitor to your website.

Step 5: Trigger the action you have determined as a commission-generating activity for new customers (ex. completing a purchase, filling out a lead generation form, etc.). You must use a new email address for the test customer (one that is not in the Ambassador system) to accurately test commissions.

Please note, if you’ve enabled recurring commissions, for instance with a subscription, you’ll need to trigger a recurring bill to ensure the subsequent commissions are being awarded.

Step 6: After triggering a commission, wait about 15 minutes to see if it has successfully been detected in the “Commissions” tab. If no commission is registered, you’ll need to ensure the API configuration or conversion tracking through the Editor is correctly installed on your website.
